Pininfarina was the genius behind this front-engined masterpiece. The design was derived from the almost identical looking 365 GT4 2+2 (which itself was based on the famous Daytona). Production began in 1976, when Ferrari revealed its first car fitted with an automatic transmission, the 400, at the Paris Motor show of 1976. The GT version however took advantage of a five-speed all synchromesh transmission. Although the incorporation of an automatic transmission, and U.S. emissions compliance, indicate it may have been designed for the Americans market, no version of the 400 series was ever officially imported to the USA. Despite this, many have been brought to America as grey imports where the car enjoyed a limited popularity with movie stars such as Sammy Davis Jr. The interior was lavishly appointed with rich leather, fine wood and higher end carpet. The injection version followed with Bosch K-Jetronic under the bonnet. Today, its sleek Pininfarina-designed lines and relatively limited production numbers certainly give it classic status.

Originally registered on 25th May 1984, this Ferrari has only had six keepers in its 32 years on the road. Purchased by the current owner in 2012, this Ferrari is without doubt a beautiful car and one that has been well looked after. The metallic Grigio Silverstone paintwork is in a very good standard and finish; the cream/buttermilk soft leather trim has a delightful patina and could be described as very good. The vendor has ensured this Ferrari is properly stored when not in use and, after many years in his possession, has decided the time had come for this 400i to find a new home. Supplied with a leather bound file which includes Ferrari handbooks, the history file of this 400i comes with a V5C registration document, a full years' MoT test certificate and numerous invoices from Maranello and others. NVS Hypercars have recently carried out a circa £2,000 service which included a new MSD ignition. In recent years, the 400 series Ferrari's have increased in value as the market has come to realise what an underrated car the Ferrari 400i is.
