In 1949, Fiat released the front engine Fiat 500 economy car to meet the demands of the post-war market. It had a two-door coupé body with sun-roof, which was later complemented by an Estate version. Both continued until 1954 when they were replaced by an all-new, lighter car. The new car had a rear-mounted engine, on the pattern of the Volkswagen Beetle, just like its bigger brother the 1955 Fiat 600. Several car makers followed the now uncommon rear engine configuration at the time and were quite successful. The Neckar version of the 500 was manufactured in Heilbronn under a complicated deal involving NSU and was introduced in October 1961. Steyr-Puch  produced cars based on the Fiat 500 under license in Graz, Austria.

The 'L' or Lusso penultimate model like the car offered here today was produced between 1968 and 1972 and featured a much modernised interior including a renewed dashboard which brought the Fiat 500 up to date. Greater comfort and style were provided in this new model for the new generation.

This wonderful example presented in an attractive shade of light blue, was the subject of a complete restoration by Gesuino Pezzolla of Puglia, Italy in 2015/2016. This work included a full engine rebuild and all mechanicals. The present owner imported it to the UK in 2016  and subsequently had it dated by the Fiat 500 Enthusiasts' Club. The car also comes with an Italian Autovettura document with history and stamps dating back the 1970's. A fun iconic Italian runabout which boasts practicality and economical driving.
